Aakash Chopra believes that England's problems are deep-rooted and cannot be fixed with quick-fix solutions

Former Indian opener and cricket commentator, Aakash Chopra, has criticized England’s performance in the 2023 World Cup, suggesting that the team may require significant changes to overcome their struggles.

Following a crushing 100-run defeat to India on October 29, England, led by Jos Buttler, suffered their fifth loss in six games, placing them at the bottom of the points table and virtually eliminating them from the tournament.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Chopra expressed his concern about England’s approach to their dismal World Cup run.

“Something’s up with this team. At first, they had a bit of a reputation. Changes are coming after this tournament. I wouldn’t be shocked if some say farewell to ODI cricket,” he said.

Highlighting the temporary fixes employed by England, Chopra cited the recall of Ben Stokes from ODI retirement as an example.

“You brought Ben Stokes out of retirement. You recalled Moeen Ali for Tests. England cricket is using a Band-Aid when surgery might be needed. This team didn’t get ready for the tournament the right way,” he added.

“We were all deceived. I don’t know any expert who didn’t place them in the top four. I don’t even consider myself an expert. We all predicted, for what it’s worth, that England would surely make it, that they play fantastic cricket, but do they really?”, he said.

Chopra observed weaknesses in both England’s batting and bowling departments throughout the tournament.

“England’s performance has been quite average. The bowling hasn’t been very sharp. While they did bowl well in this match, it wasn’t very impressive throughout the tournament. The batting is highly disappointing, from Jonny Bairstow to Jos Buttler,” he concluded.
