"One student in my second grade class was a surprisingly talented artist. When he was faced with the “Design a Chair for Mr. Bear” challenge, he sketched out his idea: an elaborate plush sofa. He had trouble transforming his idea using the legos, initially, until he and I figured out a compromise. As an architectural studies major, I could relate to his dilemma. He would create a sturdy reclining chair that worked well, and then he would decorate the chair by taping on his drawings. At the end of the activity I could tell he learned that he could combine his newly learned engineering concepts with his artistic vision. From then on, he was more enthusiastic and excited to apply what he learned to future projects."
