Week 4 - Halloween Activity
For Halloween we decided to take a break from the legos and do a a holiday candy-related activity. We wanted to teach the kids about structures by showing them the best way to build a tower, using toothpicks and marshmallows. We discussed the advantages of triangle supports and braced-square structures, distributing the load, and having a wide, sturdy base. The primary goal was for the tower to be as tall as possible. A few groups ended up building shorter, sturdier towers, so we tested to see how much candy they could hold. We ran into some problems during this activity. The marshmallows ended up melting together, making it very difficult for the kids to build with them. In the future, we will use a different type of candy, like gumdrops.
