Week 3 - Material Properties Scavenger Hunt
This week we began a two week lesson on materials engineering. First, we introduced the concepts of materials and how the different properties of materials, like color, size, shape, and shiny vs. dullness could affect what the material was used for. Then, we handed out Material Properties Scavenger Hunt worksheets on which the students had to find two objects in the classroom for each of the following categories: wood, plastic, paper, and metal, and write down their properties. They received a sticker for each section completed and the goal was to collect all of the stickers. This activity was very successful because by the end of the class the students really understood what the different properties were and how they affected what the materials were used for. It should have been modified for first grade to include less writing - we spent a lot of time spelling words for them.
