Week 1 - Sturdy Wall

The curriculum we are using for our classroom is the Simple Machines First Grade curriculum.

1.In our first class, we asked the students what they thought engineering was and discussed with them the definition of engineering.

2. We opened up the simple machine kits and taught the students the names of the LEGOs and did a matching worksheet with pictures of the LEGOs and the names of the LEGOs.

3. The first lesson we did with them was the sturdy wall activity. We wrote the definition of sturdy on the board. We had a worksheet that had them brainstorming about where they've seen sturdy walls and to draw what their own sturdy wall would look like. We spent the rest of the class building. To test the sturdy walls we did the flick test to see whether or not the wall would fall down with the "wind" and a short drop test to see how sturdy the walls actually were. The activity was pretty successful. The only thing we would change would be to give a height specification for the tower because a few pairs of students were just building out horizontally and not vertically.
