| Lesson 1 - Sturdy Wall |
|
We began the semester simply with a lesson on building with legos. We talked with the students about what they know about engineering, and about what an engineer does as an introduction to STOMP. After introductions we talked about overlapping legos to create a sturdy design, and taught the names of the different lego pieces (bricks, beams, plates). The students drew a picture of a sturdy wall before they began building. This lesson went really well once the kids took to the idea of overlapping. We used the cinderblocks in the walls of their classroom as an example of overlapped bricks. The walls were tested with a flick test and a drop test. For a couple of the groups that finished quickly, we gave them an extension to see how tall they could make a sturdy wall. Students seemed to really enjoy this lesson, and worked together very well. |
