Lesson 6: Goop
In this lesson, we supplied each group with 2 cups: a cup with cornstarch and a cup with water.  We also put out food coloring and paper plates.  We instructed the students to slowly add water into the cup of cornstarch.  After adding what they thought was an appropriate amount (so the mixture wasn't too liquidy or too solid), they touched the mixture.  They noticed that if you poke it quickly, it feels as if it is a solid.  If you poke it softly and let it "suck in" your finger, it feels as if it is a liquid.  They thought this was really cool.  After, we let them pour their goop out onto the paper plate and add some color by dropping in food coloring.  They really liked this part.  All the groups worked well together and really liked this activity.  This activity was more for the fun aspect than incorporating the engineering design process, but it was still educational and a lot of fun!
