This week's goal was to reinforce the understanding of the light sensor and programming with tolerances. The activity consisted of a tape rectangle on the floor filled with jolly ranchers. Each group needed to build a shovel onto the front of their car that was capable of pushing candy. They then had to program their cars to push as much candy as possible out of the box without their car driving over the tape boundary. To do this, they needed to test the light tolerance of the tape vs. the floor. Their program had to tell the car to back up and turn around when it reached the dark tape. This was a good activity that didn't require a lot of new information. The class was able to work with their existing knowledge to figure out how to get the most candy. It was a successful class, and the kids now fully understand how the light sensor works. And using candy in the activity made the kids more enthusiastic! In the future, make sure it's clear that everyone gets one turn before second turns. The group with the first working car ended up taking multiple turns and monopolizing the candy supply until we realized what was happening and made them let other groups try.
