ISB Week 3: Fan Activity (part 2)
This week we focused on getting the students to finish up the design of their fans and teaching them how to program their fans. The students were able to finish up building in the first half of class, and we encouraged any students who were done build early to add extensions to their fans. Some students added an extra set of blades or added wheels to their designs. One group even turned theirs into a type of amusement park ride. We led the students through programming their fans to spin for a certain duration. All of the students seemed to easily catch onto this simple programming. We then taught the students how to make their fans spin for a certain number of rotations. After just seeing these basic movement programming concepts, the students tried out all different ideas--making the fans rotate clockwise then counterclockwise, making the wheels move if they made their fans into a car, having the bricks say words at different intervals, etc. Finally, one of the teachers led a "show and tell" session with everybody's fans, and the students were very receptive to seeing all of the different design ideas.
