We ran the egg drop activity for the first class and used it to introduce the engineering design process and the idea of constraints as each group was given limited materials to build with (tape, cotton balls, popsicle sticks and newspaper). After talking through the engineering design process we passed out worksheets for each group to help them organize the brainstorming and the sketching of ideas. About a quarter of the groups were successful in protecting their egg but everyone enjoyed the activity.
