| Week 3: Sturdy Car extension, Think Like A Robot |
|
This week, we used the first half hour for an extension activity, and to run the shake, drop and ramp tests to see how the cars performed. The extension activity was to build a seat for the lego figure provided in the kits, such that it wouldn't fall out during the shake or drop tests. The activity itself was fairly easy - most of the cars passed the tests with the lego figure still in place - but something that most of the students overlooked was that during the drop test, the cars with the big tyres would bounce and flip over, right on to the lego figure's head. To prevent what he called "massive head trauma," one of the students and his partner had designed a casing over and around the lego figure, thus protecting it, and it seemed to be a pretty smart solution to the problem. After the extension activity, we did the Think Like A Robot activity to introduce the concept of programming. This was fairly simple, and everybody realized what they were supposed to do pretty quickly. |
