This was our first day in the classroom. We introduced the students to the Engineering Design Process and talked about different things that engineers do. Then we presented them with the challenge of using tape, newspaper, cotton balls, and popsicle sticks to create a structure that would protect an egg during a fall. We gave each group the same amount of materials so they would learn how to work with limited materials. The classroom was pretty crowded and the tape kept getting stuck to everything, so we had to give the students more tape. The students did a good job of planning their ideas and then building. Most groups were successful with protecting the egg, but when a group was not successful we made sure to reiterate the redesign step of the EDP. The students had a lot of fun with the activity, esspecially since they could look at the eggs that broke. This was a good activity to introduce students to engineering concepts.
