Bumper Cars (Touch sensor)

This week, we decided to let the students have some fun by designing a bumper car!

We originally hoped the kids will be able to be familiar with using the touch sensor and having their cars play "bumper car" game as they would in the amusement park. We suggested them to build a bumper in front of their NXT cars which has touch sensor attached to it.

Many kids struggled with building a sturdy bumper and attaching the touch sensor in a place so that the touch sensor will actually sense the touch when the car hits another object. The half of the class managed to build and program their cars, but many others barely got through building the bumper part. I think we might want to work on time management better, since we keep on running into the same problem of not finishing on time.

Now that we have only 2-3 sessions left for the semester, we are debating whether we should continue with this activity for another week or start with a new activity for the grandiose finale. We are hoping that we would be able to find/create an activity that requires using more than 2-3 sensors simultaneously (so that kids will get to use their accumulated knowledge on NXT sensors), but we are still thinking so far.

The kids were absolutely excited for building their own bumper cars for their Funland, though! :)
