The Bangladesh men’s national cricket team became an associate member of the ICC in 1977. They competed in six ICC Trophies, the leading ODI competition for non-Test-playing nations. They entered international cricket with the 1979 ICC Trophy in England. Bangladesh’s first one-day match was against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in March 1986.

The watershed moment in Bangladesh cricket came when they won the ICC Trophy in Malaysia in 1997. They qualified for their first Cricket World Cup in England in 1999. Bangladesh stunned the cricketing world by defeating Pakistan, causing the tournament’s biggest upset. Bangladesh also defeated Scotland in the ICC event. In June 2000, Bangladesh were granted full ICC membership.

They played their first Test match against India in Dhaka in November 2000. Bangladesh became the tenth Test-playing nation. Although they scored 400 plus in the first innings, they lost the match by nine wickets.

Bangladesh had to wait until 2004 to register their first one-day victory since the 1999 World Cup when they beat Zimbabwe. They also beat Zimbabwe to register their maiden Test victory in 2005. They drew the second Test and thus registered their maiden Test series win. In 2009, Bangladesh visited the West Indies for two Tests. They won both games and secured their first overseas Test series victory.

Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals of the 2015 ODI World Cup. They have been runners-up thrice in the Asia Cup, in 2012, 2016, and 2018. They went down to India in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy final in a pulsating last-ball finish. In 2019, Bangladesh won the Ireland Tri-Nation Series. This was their first-ever win in a multi-nation ODI tournament final win.

Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Habibul Bashar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Rafique, Mohammad Ashraful, Aminul Islam, Akram Khan, Mustafizur Rahman are regarded among Bangladesh’s finest players.
