Adam Gilchrist said Glenn Maxwell’s double hundred against Afghanistan was the best ODI innings in the format’s history.

The all-rounder scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls, laced with 21 fours and 10 sixes at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Gilchrist said Maxwell’s knock has saved ODI cricket. “He played the best ODI innings without a doubt. It has saved ODI cricket. We see a lot of sensational display in T20 cricket but it is very rear in the fifty-over format,” he said on Club Prairie Fire.

“We were predicting the end of one-day internationals after some games in the World Cup. This format needed a shot in the arm and Maxwell’s effort has forced people to go back and think about fifty-over games. His knock will be remembered for long time,” he added.

From 91/7 to 203/7, Maxwell took the Men in Yellow to an unbelievable victory.
