In a low-scoring affair, India humbled champions England in match number 29 of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Having been asked to bat, India were restricted to a paltry score of 229/9 in 50 overs. Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with an 87-run effort. Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul played crucial knocks worth 49 and 39, respectively. England bowled well as a unit. Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid were superb.

In response, India saw England start on a decent note before the floodgates opened. From 30/0, England were reeling at 39/4 and then 51/5. India got the key wickets at key moments to pick up their sixth win of the tournament and get back to the top of the table. Mohammed Shami was sensational for India and continued his brilliant run in ODI World Cups. Jasprit Bumrah was solid as well.

England were bowled out for 129 and lost by 100 runs.

18000 international runs for Rohit Sharma

Indian skipper Rohit scored a gutsy knock of 87 from 103 balls. By doing so, the veteran cricketer surpassed the 18000-run mark in international cricket. In 457 matches, Rohit has raced to 18040 runs at 43.46. He owns 45 tons and 99 fifties. He is the 20th player in world cricket to amass 18000-plus international runs. Rohit, who got past 10500 ODI runs, owns 3853 runs in the twenty-twenty format for India and another 3677 runs in the longest format.

10500 ODI runs for Rohit

Rohit has also gone past 10500 ODI runs. He owns 10510 runs at 49.34. Rohit struck his 54th ODI fifty, besides also having 31 tons under his belt. He is now the sixth Indian to surpass 10500 ODI runs and the 12th overall. He went past Chris Gayle’s tally of 10480 runs in ODIs.

12th score of 50-plus in ODI Cricket World Cup

With the help of his 87-run effort, Rohit has got to 12 scores of 50-plus in the ODI World Cups. Rohit registered his fifth fifty and has already smacked seven centuries. With 12 fifty-plus scores, he has levelled the show with Virat Kohli, Kumar Sangakkara, and Shakib Al Hasan. Only Sachin Tendulkar owns more (21). Rohit has 1376 runs in ODI World Cups at 65.52.

1000 ODI runs in 2023

Rohit has become the 3rd player to get past 1000 ODI runs in 2023. He has raced to 1056 runs this year, averaging 55.57. He joined the likes of Shubman Gill and Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka in terms of 1000-plus runs in ODIs this year.

Maiden ODI WC duck for Kohli

Virat Kohli, who has been in a solid run of form with the bat in the ongoing World Cup, suffered a rare failure. He was dismissed for a nine-ball duck versus England, with David Willey managing to send him back. Kohli has now registered his maiden ODI World Cup duck in what was his 32nd inning across four editions (2011-2023).

Kohli now has four ODI ducks versus England. It’s the most he owns versus a nation in the 50-over format. Kohli was tied in terms of ducks with West Indies (also 3), but now it’s England who have steered clear. Meanwhile, Kohli now owns 11 international ducks against England across formats. His next worst tally is 6 versus Australia.

2500 ODI runs for KL Rahul

KL Rahul smashed a vital 39-run knock from 58 balls. He shared a 91-run stand alongside Rohit. Rahul has now raced past 2500 ODI runs. He has 2507 runs in 67 games at 50.14. He also went past Vinod Kambli’s tally of 2477 runs. 

1500 runs in Asia for Rahul

Besides getting to 2500 ODI runs, Rahul saw himself surpassing 1500 ODI runs in Asia. In 41 matches, he has 1537 runs at an average of 51.23. He has three tons and 10 fifties in the sub-continent.

4500 List A runs for Rahul

Rahul also went past another landmark. He now owns 4500-plus runs in the 50-over format overall. Rahul needed 22 runs to reach the milestone of 4500, and he now has 4015 runs at over 46.

India remain only side with this special record

India, who played their sixth match in the ongoing World Cup 2023 at home, is yet to be bowled out by an opposition team. India lost nine wickets versus England on Sunday. India had lost six scalps versus NZ, three versus Bangladesh, three versus Pakistan, two versus Afghanistan, and four against the Aussies in the opener. Notably, every other team in the World Cup has been bowled out. 

Adil Rashid races past 350 international wickets

Adil Rashid claimed two wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs. He is the ninth English bowler now to accomplish 350 international wickets. Among active players, only James Anderson and Moeen Ali are ahead of him. Rashid owns 192 ODI scalps. Meanwhile, Graeme Swann is England’s most successful spinner, with 410 international wickets.

England’s lowest ODI World Cup score versus India

England posted their lowest World Cup score versus India. Before this, their previous lowest total versus India was 168 in 2003. Meanwhile, England also recorded their fifth-lowest ODI World Cup score.

Shami becomes third Indian to join this list

Mohammed Shami finished with an exceptional spell of 4/22 from seven overs. He bowled two maidens. Shami has now raced to 40 ODI World Cup scalps, becoming the third Indian after Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan (44) to do so. 

More World Cup feats for Shami

Shami picked up his fourth four-for in ODI World Cups. He is the fourth overall to do so and the first pacer as well. He joined spinners Shane Warner, Muralidaran, and Imran Tahir with four four-wicket hauls in the ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, Shami holds the best strike rate among bowlers in WC history. His tally reads 16.97.

Unwanted records for England

As per Cricbuzz, England joined Australia as the second defending champion team to lose four matches in the next World Cup. Australia, who won the 1987 edition, scripted this unwanted record in 1992.

England have now lost four ODI World Cup matches in a row for the first time ever.
